The golden age of Spanish music began with the publication of the works of Luys Milan (1536) written for an instrument called the Vihuela de Mano. In his musical collection "El Maestro", Milan exploited all the technical and artistic possibilities of the vihuela to fine effect. The vihuela had six double strings and was probably adapted from the Renaissance lute and tuned the same way. From the Baroque period, Gaspar Sanz wrote the charming Folias, a favorite dance. With the classic era and transition to the concert hall age, a group of guitarists appeared who strove for recognition of the instrument in these new surroundings. Notable among them, both as virtuoso and composer for the guitar, was Fernando Sor (1778-1839) called the "Beethoven of the guitar". His studies are like the Chopin Etudes in their musical beauty. Estudio V (broken chords) are from a collection of twenty studies by Sor edited by Segovia. Near the end of the 19th century the phenomenal Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909), as virtuoso who wrote Recuerdos de la Alhambra recorded on this CD.
